Challah Bread

Ingredients

  • 4 to 4 and 1/4 c AP flour
  • 3/4 c water (lukewarm)
  • 6 T vegetable oil
  • 3 T honey
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 1/2 t salt
  • 4 t instant yeast
  • 1 egg (for topping)
  • poppy seeds (for topping)
  • Directions

    1. Sift 4 cups of flour into a large bowl.
    2. Add the rest of the ingredients.
    3. Knead until you have a soft smooth dough (if too sticky, add a little flour).
    4. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise for 2 hours (will not double).
    5. Gently transfer to a lightly greased work surface.
    6. Divide dough into 3 pieces.
    7. Roll into ropes about 20 inches long.
    8. Braid the loaf on parchment paper.
    9. Gently lift ad place on a baking sheet.
    10. Lightly cover with greased plastic wrap and let rise for 60-90 minutes.
    11. Preheat oven to 375.
    12. Beat egg with a little water and brush bread.
    13. Place poppy seeds on top.
    14. Bake for 25-30 minutes (deep golden brown).
